Great photo of NTC town Medina Wasl, made to resemble an Iraqi town with all of the fixings.

Secretary of the Army John McHugh toursMedina Wasl, one of several villages built at the NationalTraining Centerat Fort Irwin, Calif., to approximate an Iraqi towncomplete with a marketplace, hotel, mosque, restaurants, and a policedepartment. SSG Wells says:
For viewers of this picture who haven't been over there, the kids of Afghanistan love it when we pass out pens during humanitarian missions. For most people around the world, a pen is an item that is readily available everywhere you go and is part of our everyday lives. However, in Afghanistan, they are so poverty stricken that even a pen is considered something of value. i was surprised to learn this during my last deployment.

Some great points in this article.
Take it from someone who has spent the last half-decade studying terrorist plots: A homeless al Qaeda is the best guarantee against large-scale attacks.
There is simply no substitute for the trust and confidence built by physically meeting, jointly conceiving, and then training together for a large-scale, complex operation on the other side of the world.

Excellent book and here is the Hooah News chosen review:
"Even though Marie [Pat's wife] never voiced her concern about Pat's decision to join the Army or the Rangers, Pat knew that his decisions impacted her greatly. The book quotes from Pat's journal while at basic training: "How the hell I have been able to keep her after all these years is a goddamn miracle. Why does she put up with it? Who does this? Who takes a perfectly perfect life and ruins it? A perfectly happy wife and marriage and jeopardizes it?" "
